Chapter 9

Lacey didn’t get a lot of sleep on Sunday night. Her brain was trying to compute what had happened over the weekend. By making love with Nick, something in their dynamics had changed. Nick hadn’t said or done anything that was out of the ordinary. If anyone had looked through the window, she was sure they would have seen a very normal looking family who enjoyed spending time with each other. Only they weren’t. A family that was. Therese was her family. And Nick was Therese’s biological family. But a family unit they weren’t.

The problem she had was she was no longer seeing Nick as just Therese’s father. She looked forward to his company. He was funny and considerate and interested in what she had to say. And magnificent in bed. She liked him too much, Lacey decided ruefully.

She got up early on Monday morning as usual and took her morning coffee outside. The sky was clear, with a glow of orange as the sun started to rise. The birds chirped in the trees nearby. The morning was splendidly perfect, a perfect early summer’s day, and yet here she was lamenting about life.

She was not in love with him, she told herself resolutely. She could appreciate a good catch of a guy, but she didn’t need to be intimate or fancy him to value the way he respected and treasured Therese. In fact, she despaired, she couldn’t let any more opportunities arise where they were going to fall into bed together. She needed barriers and boundaries. And fast. If she didn’t, she might just succumb to his charms and where would that leave her when he moved on to someone else? And he would; most people from the upper echelons of society planned to only marry someone else from the same class. That’s probably why he was engaged to someone like Diana in the first place. At least he was unaware of her own upbringing.

She’d ask him to stay at a nearby B & B and only visit in the daytime, only until she had a chance to find a larger house that could accommodate Nick in his own quarters. That would be both proactive and appropriate Lacey admitted shrewdly. She didn’t want Therese to miss out on knowing her father. But for the time being, she’d ask for space. He’d respect that, she was sure.

While her plan was still fresh in her mind, and she had the resolve to see it through, she had to tell Nick immediately. It was the decent thing to do, not wait until he arrived on Friday night expecting to crash at hers again for the weekend.

Without hesitation, she swiped her phone.

“Lacey. This is an early call. Did you not sleep well either?”

“Nick. I need to talk to you.”

“Now you’ve either decided that you miss my body so much that you want phone sex, or it’s ominous. For some reason, I’m placing my money on the latter.”

“Ha. Definitely not the phone sex.” Although the thought of it did appeal.
